Yellow Diamonds - A Girl's Best Friend?

Yellow diamonds are relatively common amongst fancy colored diamonds, though a lot rarer than white diamonds. It is a frequent false belief that anatural yellow diamond is less valuable than a clear diamonds. Although very light or slightly yellow diamonds are thought to be quite typical and not of great value, yellow diamonds such as intense and vivid are quite valuable.

The pure yellow stones are much more valuble than yellow diamonds with secondary brown hues, however, if the diamond has secondary colors of green-yellow or orange yellow, this may increase the price of the stone quite substantially. This is because these stones are much rarer than yellow diamonds.

Natural fancy yellow diamonds are rated on the strength and intensity of color. The highest-quality grade is the Vivid Yellow, closely followed by the Intense Yellow diamond. The lowest quality of natural yellow diamond is the Light Yellow diamond, closely followed by the Fancy Yellow. Some tones of Vivid Yellow diamonds along with the more rare Intense Yellow diamonds are called Canary Diamonds. Canary diamonds are the rarest among yellow diamonds and thus they cost much more and are desirable by both collectors and sophisticated buyers. The canary diamond has a very specific shade of yellow, and even if you have never seen a Canary Yellow before, if you were to see one, you will realize that it is a Canary Diamond.

Yellow diamonds look wonderful when they are mixed with white diamonds and generally yellow diamonds are set in yellow gold. A 3-stone ring should include white stones and the yellow stone should be placed in the center. A beautiful setting is a yellow diamond with trapeze, triangle or oval white diamonds..

Like in other fancy color diamonds the color remains the main thing that affects the value of the diamond, then comes size and clarity. Clarity is also crucial in evaluation of yellow diamonds, though this is much less than in traditional white diamonds.

The ideal cut for fancy colored diamonds is the Radiant cut. This is the ideal shape to take full advantage of the color. Yellow diamonds can be also in the Cushion cut, Oval cut, and Pear and Heart shapes. The rarest are the Emerald, Square Emerald and the Brilliant cuts (round shape). The price for these shapes are considerably higher for all fancy diamonds and not just for yellow diamonds.

The cut quality of a colored diamond is very different to the traditional diamond. The objective when cutting a fancy color diamond is to emphasize the depth and saturation of color while managing to strike a balance between carat weight and brilliance. It is vital that the diamond is sold with a grading report from a trustworthy laboratory for example GIA, HRD, IGI or EGL. The report must state that the color is "Natural". The report must also state the intensity of color, and also how the color is distributed throughout the stone.

The Kimberley Octahedron is the largest naturally formed actohedral diamond in the world. The owner of the mine has decided against cutting this diamond at all, but to keep it in its original condition. Due to this the color and distribution grades cannot be given to this magnificent diamond.
